PostTechnical Research

Fractal BalancePostTechnical Research is the culmination of 20+ years of work in developing & thinking about technology. During that time I’ve architected & led the development of many commercial products that have been used for everything from the bill-of-materials system for the Boeing 767 (Digital Equipment Rdb/VMS) to software design & application generation for companies such as GenRe, Aetna, Fleet Bank (now Bank of America) & the U.S. Army (Riverton Software HOW) to product data management for Flextronics, Jabil, Sanmina-SCI (Agile Software) to large scale work collaboration & document management linked to enterprise storage (eRoom Technology, Documentum & EMC). As a consultant, I’ve worked with over 100 companies to analyze & advise them on technology strategy, focusing on the alignment of business & technology strategy as well as the integration of emerging technologies into existing product streams. Most recently the focus of this consulting work has been on technology & strategy for healthcare information systems.

I think that PostTechnical Research is an appropriate brand & description for this work because it reflects the fact that much of my current work & thinking is beyond technology – that is, it is focused on the social, organizational & cultural context of technology development & technology use. No analysis or predictions about technology can be accurate without taking this cultural context into account. Technology is, after all, a cultural endeavor, one done by people in social settings. We are in the post-technical age, so here is PostTechnical Research.
